Technology holds the key to solving our environmental and societal problems, right?

But in reality, digital products are part of the problem. We can look into the UN Sustainable Development Goals to help us understand the unsustainable parts of digital products. Ever-growing websites contribute to CO2 emissions. Online shops promote wasteful behaviors. We build our products in a way that only the privileged can use them.

But there is hope. A growing movement of tech professionals is making the internet more responsible and eco-friendly. In this talk, we will explore actionable ideas to make your digital products more sustainable. You will learn how to join the movement and where to get started with sustainable product development.

Digital Sustainability is not just a trend. It has become a necessity. The internet uses more and more resources, such as energy and water and it creates massive greenhouse gas emissions.

Circularity is a framework for designing physical products. It aims to address waste and resource use. But for circularity, physical products are often center stage. Digital products remain overlooked.

We first take a look at the roles that designers and developers play. Then, we uncover how circular design and sustainability apply to the digital world. A closer look at the R-strategies for a circular economy will show us how we can use them for digital product development. Participants will gain practical strategies for their daily work. And a memorable framework to remember them.

Lately, there’s been a big buzz around Sustainable UX and Digital Sustainability on conferences. Most UXers agree that it’s a good thing to do, but the question remains: “How do I convince my team, my product manager, my stakeholders, or my clients to do this?”
